The Marine Policy Center (MPC) conducts social scientific research that integrates economics, policy analysis, and law with the Institution’s basic research in ocean sciences. Broad areas of recent research include:

  • ecosystem-based conservation and management of living resources
  • dynamics of coupled natural and human systems
  • natural capital and ecosystem services
  • coastal and marine spatial planning and zoning
  • shoreline change and coastal resilience
  • coastal and marine natural hazards
  • economics of ocean observing systems
  • offshore energy development
  • oceans and human health

While MPC’s research is based in rigorous academic disciplines, much of it is applied in nature and motivated by current issues in coastal and marine resource conservation and management and marine industries.
